exhaust gaskets
exhaust gaskets
I have found some exhaust leaks that i would like to fix. One is at
the exhaust port and gasket B heat exchanger and gasket c heat
exchanger. it looks like it is the c gasket that has a leak in it. I
anyone making these or can they be made?

Re: exhaust gaskets
One option is to have a race car shop just make a custom header or even an entire pipe system. (not original, but always an option).

Re: exhaust gaskets
The gasket at the exhaust port is a copper o-ring. The other spots you mention use a high
temperature gasket. I have had excellent luck using the exhaust mender kits sold at auto
parts stores. It consists of a tube of grey goo and some wire mesh. The grey goo has been able to withstand any of the temperatures found along the exhaust path. If the damage is not too serious at your gaskets, you may be able to use the wire mesh and the grey goo together with your existing (damaged) gasket to make a good seal. The kit sells for about $3 and it has saved me many times.
Give the grey goo a couple days to harden before you fire up the engine.
good luck,
Dale

Re: exhaust gaskets
I have found some hight temp flat gasket at the local car store,
ordered it and am going to give it a try but still not sure about where
is comes out of the head. B&B peened them out but that did not do the
job. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Re: exhaust gaskets
For the copper o-ring gasket at the header, you might consider using some
copper tubing. You can get it in the plumbing section of your home improvement
store. When you make the circle and where the ends meet, you could file it at a 45
degree angle to help with the sealing. You could also solder the ends although regular
solder has a low melting point (I think it is around 400 degrees F) and I am not sure about
silver solder but it is higher. I think a 45 degree angle with no solder would be fine since
any exhaust pressure would force the circle to close.
You could also try using some bare copper or aluminum electrical wire. Use solid wire and
not stranded wire.
good luck,
Dale

Re: exhaust gaskets
I just went to a local motorcycle shop and found 2 copper gaskets for
the exhaust. These are a tiny bit smaller but inside is the same so
hoping these will work. also the name of a gasket sealer for setting
them in place. Cant get much better than that! So next week will be
the test to take apart and but back togather.

Re: exhaust gaskets
Try your local Motor Cycle shop and ask if they have any for a Honda CB100, they are a bit thinner but seem to hold.

Re: exhaust gaskets
The copper O rings for a CB 450 and 500 also work fine.

Re: exhaust gaskets
I am in this same position after removing my manifold and found that
exhaust manifold gaskets from a air cooled VW fit perfectly over the
studs and the size of the opening is good too. I am going to leave
the crushed copper seal in the head and just install the VW gasket.
These are a soft metal crush type gasket, I'll report back once I get
mine running again.

Re: exhaust gaskets
I have found that the VW gaskets work best if you leave the old O rings in place. This gives the new gaskets a wider base to seal against.
