Chewed up stator
Chewed up stator
After finally removing the rotor, I found the stator wasn't attached where it was suppose to be and it was very chewed up. Is this common? Anyone have any thoughts? Ways to prevent from happening again?
Re: Chewed up stator
I had one once that the retaining bolts had come loose and the stator had fallen against the rotor and chewed it up. Had to have the stator rewound. Then just reassembled with red locktight on the retaining bolts.

Re: Chewed up stator
I found the problem.....previous owner. There were no bolts attaching the stator so it was just flopping around and getting chewed up by the rotor. There were plenty of aluminum and copper shavings but no steel shavings or pieces of bolts and all 4 bolt holes were empty. I guess the previous owner thought osmosis would keep it in place??? I have another one one the way so hopefully I'll be in business on the charging system soon.

What retaining bolts? The stator is held in place by a single 17mm head bolt through the fan belt/timing pulley.
Or did you guys turn the page without telling me.

Excuse me, I got my parts mixed up. Your all correct, the stator is the windings and are held in place with 4 bolts. I can't even imagine how it could run without it being held in place with the bolts. Although it is a tight fit.

Re: Chewed up stator
The roter is held by the 17mm bolt, the stator is held in the housing by 4 6mm bolts.
Re: Chewed up stator
I get them confused too, you had me checking my service manual to make sure I actually new what I was talking about.

A good way to remember is rotor rotates a stator is stationary
