corrected valve clearance.
corrected valve clearance.
A Big thanks to Kevin for not only telling my valve lash was adjustable, but also for telling me how to do it. I should have read the manual more when I reassembled my engine.
My valve clearance was way too big.
After adjusting them the valves, the tapping sound was totally gone, and my engine has much more power. It's like I added a cylinder.
Just curious: What clearance do most of you like to use on your valves? I went with 0.008" on all valves.
thanks again,
Mike.

Re: corrected valve clearance.
How to? I set it with the .003 and .004 feeler gauges ( kind of a go/no go system) this way you don't get it to tight. I set it with the .004 and check it with the .003. If the .003 gauge does not go but the .004 does, then it is set properly.

Re: corrected valve clearance.

Lets take a close look at what is being done.
The optimum setting is .003. The .004 to .005 is not the best setting when a situation that is caused by the rocker to cam rolling over and creating a gap at the rear of the cam lobe beats the center of the rocker arm face. The timing necessary to reduce the clearance as in Paragraph 7 in the Coupe supplement, page 41, says this. .004 to .005 is to loose causing poor performance. Have you noticed that there is a indentation on the center of the rocker arm face? That condition is because of a loose adjustment. Or better yet, have you noticed that it is hard to keep an adjustment because a previous owner put to much torque on the rocker arm bolt causing a dimple in the rocker arm shaft. If you don't figure out how to adjust the rockers to the recommended .003, then you will have rocker arm slap. Causing the indentation at the center of the rocker arm face
.003 is the setting as stated in the Sedan shop manual page 2-4 under normal valve clearance.

Re: corrected valve clearance.
Regardless of what the optimal spec is, .003 or .004, I couldn't reconcile the following statement pasted from an earlier reply:
"If the .003 gauge does not go but the .004 does, then it is set properly."
In other words, if a .004 is a go how could a .003 (a thinner feeler gauge) NOT go? I will happily accept .003 as optimal but the go/no go method described is backwards. If a .004 is a go then anything less, .003, .002, .0015 would also be a go.

The reading is supposed to be .003 not .004. So you have it correct, it must have been late.

Re: corrected valve clearance.
Just trying to clarify the point. And I agree, Bill's advice over the years via this group has been excellent, so I had no doubt he was capable of setting the clearance correctly. Yet we do have some members who are getting their feet wet in the maintenance/repair side of the hobby so I wanted to eliminate any confusion. I was there once myself at the tender age of 17 when I bought my 600 new. It's all good.

Yep, your right, it was backwards. But, Bill has set so many valve clearances over the years that he probably got burned out from posting the same info over and over again for 30 years. Like all of us, he does this to help the Honda 600 folks.....for free!
Lighten up!
I made a mistake once also, but I reconciled it!
I hope my spelling is correct.

Re: corrected valve clearance.
Blake,it is all good. Everytime I come to this site I get some info that helps me with my coupe. I post stuff that "hopefully" is useful in some way. This is a very small group of owners, and very few of us post anything.
Bill has helped me alot, so I was defending him.
Sorry for jumping on you.
Honda 600 folks have to stick together.
Back to valve adjustment, I set mine as close to .003"-.004" as I could get. I did grind the rocker arms(valve end)to get a good surface, only removed about.003". I still had plenty of adjustment on the eccentric shafts.
See photo section.
