Good morning. I am gearing up to do some diagnostic work on my honda 600. Are there specific tools (brands) I should consider / avoid?
At a minimum, I think I need a compression tester, torque wrench, inductive timing light, dwell meter ( all the tools I had 30 years ago when working on my honda)!
I have a rusty feeler gauge that I have shined up with steel wool, but think I will just spring for a new one.

I like the Sears craftsmen pressure tester, not all that expensive and has worked for many years. It also came with an instruction manual.
Dwell, tach is good, but there is a sun tach sold in Pepboys (here) that can be adjusted to read one cylinder engines. Which is what you should have as both cylinders fire at the same time. Feeler gauge – you should have two, one wide for the Rockers and one narrow for Points. The one is for rockers should have .002 and up, while the narrow one should be in the .005 through .045 range. NAPA seems to have the ones that last, some tend to bend easy and then snap off. Torque wrench, I like snap-on brand, and you should have one foot lbs and one Inch lbs which should both be dial and not the type that click. I have done well at swap meets and then taken them to the Snap-on dealer (truck guy) to have it calibrated. Just check to see that they are tight, moves the needle, the dial is clear and rotates so it can be set stuff like that. If it has some ones name on it or something that looks like it was stolen, best to steer clear. But there are guys that buy at estate sales and sell cheep. So they are out there. Swap meets and garage sales can have some fantastic tools for sale.
