N600 engine
hi, i have a Honda Z600 that i need a motor for. I have a lead on an N600. Im wondering if its the same engine as the Z? The car has been sitting and the person that has it doesnt even know if it will turn over. If it does is it worth $150? Not to many of these cars in the middle of the country. thanks, Tim
Re: N600 engine
Also wondering if the brakes and suspension are the same on the N's as they are on the Z's thanks again

Re: N600 engine
Some of the parts are interchangeable between the N and Z. Look at the parts manuals (click here ) for the N and Z and compare the part numbers. If they have the same part number, they worked on either car.
good luck,
Dale

Re: N600 engine
If you don't already have lots of parts for your car, the price of $150 is a good deal provided the engine doesn't look like it has been submerged in water for any period of time.
Is it the same engine? Sort of. You can make either engine work in either series of car. Depending on the vintage of the N600 engine, it may be easier to make the swap. Take a look at the parts catalogs (click
here ) to spot the differences based on the engine serial numbers. While it will work, the engine you probably want to avoid is the early style with the non-synchro transmission (the serial number starts with N150 .... verify in the catalogs). The better stuff is N250.....
Some of the big differences which affect the installation are;
1) heat exchanger and exhaust system
2) valve cover port (the valve cover and camshaft housing were different between N & Z)
3) cooling fan
4) intake manifold and carb (if you get the early style carb with the diaphragm)
5) Z engine had a mechanical tach off camshaft housing which was absent in N600
I have used N600 engines in a Z600. And you can always put the mechanical tach assy on the N600 engine or add an electronic tach. From a purist point of view, when you look at both, someone will spot the different valve cover appearance.
good luck,
Dale

N600 engine
Hello all.
I am reassembling my 72 N600 engine.
I have all new gaskets (from Honda600carparts) but they are fairly thin compared to what was in the engine when I disassembled it...
Wondering if I can get away with installing them dry – or should I add some gasket spray…??
Thanks.

Cut your losses and get ahold of Steve Allen his gaskets are top notch! Maybe someone else can chime in but I know many many people happy with the Steve Allen gaskets!

Re: N600 engine
Greg; What Eric said is correct, and a gasket is needed because the surfaces your mating are not perfectly flat or you wouldn't need a gasket, just spread on some goo and put it all together. However that's not the case with your cases or the sealing areas. And thin gasket isn't going to take up the slack. I was using gasket material that was 20 thousands thick and that was cutting it close.
Even then something like Hondabond is a good idea when the goal is to keep it together for a long time. Just remember to use a good lock tight on all your bolts and torque to at least 90 inch pounds feet on all your 6mm bolts.

Re: N600 engine
Hey All, if anyone can get a hold of Steve Allen, I'd be interested in buying some gaskets as well. The Honda600carparts gaskets are paper thin and didn't hold for my 1971 '600. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
