Clutch noise

All-
I have a rattling noise that I think is coming from my clutch.  Clutch works fine. I am considering taking apart to inspect, but wanted to ask the group where to source the clutch housing busing and/or throw out bearing.
Any ideas as to the source of the noise or usual suspects that might cause this noise? I'm pretty sure it is coming from the clutch.

Sounds like the heat exchanger, not the clutch.

Hi Bill,
At times I have difficulty in engaging to 2nd gear.. can u advice me any issues with my car? Or was it me not used to driving this car?

Bill- Thanks for the tip, yea, might be the heat exchanger. I'll check into that before taking apart the clutch.  I do have a bit of an exhaust leak in that area.

Hi Pete, with the car running in neutral, have someone push the clutch pedal in. If the rattle noise changes then it could be a clutch issue. Also vary rpm and see if the noise changes. Like Bill said heat exchanger can rust out inside and rattle. But, lots of things rattle on a 45 year old car. Lyle

Then by holding the metal probe against the engine, heat exchanger, clutch... you will hear lots of noises.

Re: your earlier post, stating that you have a hard time getting transmission into second-gear.  My experience with my '72 AZ600 was that this symptom is a warning that you need an engine-oil-change.  (Recall that your engine and transmission share the same oil-bath.)  Motor oil was more basic back then, working ok in motorcycle engines (which your car basically has) but the oil broke down quicker than modern oils.  This occurred with my car every 1500 miles.  Your noise problem notwithstanding, the Honda 600 trans was very sensitive about the oil viscosity and condition.  Nowadays, 4-stroke motorcycle oils have special additives that accommodate 1) air-cooled temperature fluctuations, 2) engine lubrication requirements, and 3) transmission-shear stresses (metal sliding against metal under torque loads).
   I haven't solved your noise problem, but perhaps we can eliminate one of the symptoms of a transmission problem, the hard-shifting thing.  Change to any reputable brand of FOUR-STROKE
motorcycle oil.  ---Bryan O

Interesting; I took an engine/transmission apart once that was so full of tar (burnt oil) it couldn't shift.  The cylinders and above had all been rebuilt, but the trans and lower (crank shaft) had all been left in this tar like mess.  Maybe this has something to do with the problems Pete is experiencing.
