the car turns on but won't stay on. i adjusted the idle control screw but it is fully compressed and I've been messing with the piolt screw. i managed to keep her on but she is idling higher than i want and with no rpm gauge its hard. also at the way i have it set up as soon as i start driving her it sounds like she's almost going to cut out. i can take her to a carb tech. but if its an easy fix id rather do it myself I'm great at these types of things but i have to know the process first

Re: MY 600 won't idle
Welcome New Owner,
Your problem appears to be the Fuel Stop Solenoid is non-functional. It is mounted on the drivers side of the carb with a single screw. and has two wires coming out, one grounded to the intake manifold/head and the other to the wiring harness near the air cleaner. This solenoid should activate when the ignition is turned on, easily tested by either listening carefully when turning on ignition or removing and connecting across the battery terminals. Note: since the carburetor is connected through rubber on both ends, the solenoid MUST be grounded to function. When I owned a 600 from 1972-1978 the only mechanical failure I ever had was the Fuel Stop Solenoid. The solenoid cuts fuel flow from the low speed circuit to prevent shut-off dieseling. When failed, the car will not idle.
Hope this helps,
Richard

Re: MY 600 won't idle
How long has the fuel been in the tank? I had a problem with one of my Old-timers doing the same thing; it would start and run but after a couple of minutes it would stop. It took me several days to check everything twice and decided to drain the tank and put new fuel in. This corn mixture fell we get is only good for two to three months before it deteriorates. With new fuel in the vehicle and doing nothing else it runs like it is supposed to.
