Get tired of scraping heavy grease & muck off your Honda 600
restoration parts? I discovered this great tool made by Black &
Decker called a Scum Buster.
I bought a reconditioned one from the B&D Outlet store in Atascadero
Ca for only $16.00. It comes with a rechargeable 3.6v battery, the
charger and several cleaning attachments and the tool itself. It
spins at a slow RPM so it doesn't sling solvent all over you. You can
also buy new ones at places like KMart for just around $30.00. The
machine is fully submergible for up to 15 minutes.
I use a water based solvent in my parts cleaner called Oil Eater with
25% water mixed in. It is non flamable and not so harsh on your skin.
Castrol Cleaner is a similar product. Cost is aprox $6.00/gallon at
Costco.
Get yourself a Scum Buster and see how easy it is to clean your
parts. Hide it from your wife as she will take it away and not give
it back because it is too good for your garage. I haven't tried it in
kerosene solvent to see if it would explode, but get yourself some of
the oil eater and you won't have to find out!

That sounds like fun; but if your not really interested in cleaning parts,
go to a local machine shop or Transmission shop who will clean your parts
for a fee. It normally costs about $20.00 but everything comes back clean
as a whistle and although there may be bits of gaskets still on the aluminum
it really works great.

Yeah!!!!!!!! We had a Jet Clean at my Honda job back in 1988. It was
like a huge dishwasher for cleaning parts. It uses heat and soapy
solution. You have a huge perforated hopper and hope the lighter
parts don't get blown out into the bottom of the machine. As long as
the operator knows what he put in, you should get it all back. But if
you want to be in control of your parts - do it at home.
How many parts can you get done for 20 bucks? I tried to get a
machine shop to surface my heater boxes and he wanted $150.00 for 4
surfaces. The last cylinders I had bored cost me $118.00.

The last set of bores I had done was about a month ago and it cost me $60.00
for two bores fitted to the pistons. And in April I had 3 baskets of parts
on this cleaning which was about two and a half motors for $63.00. which
included cleaned off some gasket material and scrubbed some of the grime.
But $20.00 normally will do a single motor. What really costs is getting
Keenserts for the spark plug threads put in. Including parts it's about
$60.00 a plug hole.
