Hi All,
I'm getting closer to getting my N600 running but I am having some
trouble.
1. After replacing my fuel filter and fuel lines the filter doesn't
look correct even though I'm installing it the way I found it. I have
one nipple of the fuel filter facing down in the hole by the clamp,
the other nipple seems to high in relation to the the lower nipple of
the fuel pump. The routing of the hose going to the carb makes it
bind on the fuel fuel filter and the hole that it goes through.
Does it sound like I am installing it correctly?
2. I decided to install the new spark plugs and see if this will now
run, so far it wont.
After hooking up the fuel hose to the carb ( I flushed out the
remaining bad fuel in the line coming from the tank)I noticed that
the fuel pump didn't run very long considering the carb bowl was
empty and the line running from the pump to the carb was also empty.
I do have fuel flow to the carb but I have not removed the carb again
to see if the bowl is actually full. I did blow through the inlet on
the carb to see if the needle and seat shut off properly and on the
bench it seemed to work fine.
3. I have noticed that my spark is a very thin blue spark, not a fat
blue spark that I am used to seeing on cars with bigger coils. I have
asked about this on each board with no response, I guess no one has
checked for spark on these from the boards?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Getting closer but having some trouble
A very thin blue spark is not good. It should be a white spark and it may appear as a thin
white spark but it should be noticeable to you....even in bright daylight.
good luck,
Dale

Re: Getting closer but having some trouble
Thanks for the response Dale,
Last night I trimmed each wire back a little from the spark plug end and the drivers side wire produced a better spark but the passenger side was still thin.
Suspecting that the 35 year old plug wires may be bad I followed Bill C’s coil wire fix last night and I am going to try it out tonight.

Re: Getting closer but having some trouble
The spark isn't much better after changing the wires and it wont fire
using brake spray as a starting agent.
But I did try something in a desperate attempt to get this to fire, I
got out one of my old VW Blue coils and hooked it up to one cylinder
and it now tries to fire up, so I guess my N600 coil has just lost
its "umph" for producing a good spark.
Since this probably be a hard to find item I was wondering about the
MSD coil for motorcycles (sorry about the "M" word :)), it is compact
like the N600 and it has two seperate terminals for the plug wires.
Has anyone here tried one of these?
Or if someone has a source for the N600 coil then that would be great
as I would like to keep this looking as factory as possible.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Getting closer but having some trouble
Your approach will work. You could get 2 Bug coils and run one to each cylinder. The down side will be the larger current at the points which will wear the points out quicker. But it will work until you find the proper part. Others on hear have used dual output coils that have found at motorcycle shops or the MSD coil. Get a coil which was intended to run with a point-style ignition and generates about 25,000 volts (i.e. the standard ignition output in the 60s and 70s).
good luck,
Dale

Re: Getting closer but having some trouble
Thanks Dale,
I managed to locate a N600 coil today for this and it should be here next week. While searching for this I also found a good “possible” substitute at JC Whitney but they wont be shipping until Sept 20 th .
