hi i am about to put my "tired puppy" on the road. i have one problem... the car wont idle when cold. the engine must be over 2500 to 3000 rpm while cold but once warmed it idles at 1200rpm with a slight miss every two seconds or so. is this normal? it is a smooth runner otherwise. thank for your imput. dean

I have that miss problem to.. I had it before the rebuild and after. checked spark and replaced the spark plug wires and still does it..
could it be an air leak? I am thinking the carb or booster..

The idle at higher rpm and slight miss every two seconds are not
normal. Check the intake manifold. The black boot which connects to the carb using the large screw may not be properly sealed or the O-ring which goes between the intake and cylinder head may have an air leak. I would first look at the section where the carb connects to the engine (the place intake boot). I have noticed these are not as pliable as they used to be when new and even though you think the boot is tightly sealed to the carb ......
it isn't. You might try putting a sealer in this area to "fill in any gaps" when you tighten up on the boot. I don't know what to recommend for a sealer .... it needs something which can hold up against gasoline and alcohol.
I have seen problems like you describe and the causes have been;
1) high voltage breakdown in the ignition wiring (replace wiring or insulate the location of arc)
2) air leak at intake (I replaced the intake boot with one which was more pliable, another engine needed the O-ring replaced)
3) carb problems
4) distributor problem (high resistance in the points, one time I had a screw in the distributor which was too long and causing an arc)
These are some of the things I have seen but are probably not the only things which might cause the problems you are experiencing.

Agreed.
Also, a handy check for vacuum leaks is to pass a unlit propane torch around the intake area. If air is getting sucked in, the propane will make the revs go up. Don't forget the hose to, and the brake booster.
