do I need a puller to remove the front cv shafts from a 72 sedan?? thanks anyone

I remove the cv joint at the differential and then use a 2 jaw gear puller to press the shaft from the knuckle (where two front wheel bearings reside).  When you have the cv joint free,  put some type of covering (e.g. plastic bag) over it to keep dirt out and catch any ball bearings which may fall out.
