Hi gang, I'm really in a bind with my brake booster. Im sure there is a version of the big blue manual that has the newer style in like the one I have. My booster is all alum with three "spokes" on the face. The air vent is on the bottom front of the cylinder, it has two bleeders on the top, one at each end and has an "in' and "out" for the brake lines on the top and front forward side. I really just need to see a pic or diagram of how the rubber cups go on the shaft. The shaft is two pieces linked in the center with a joint. Starting from the front of the car the first shaft is a narrow diameter and has a small cup facing forward, further back is a another cup facing forwad that is in front of the joint. The rear shaft that connects to the big diaphram has one cup and a plastic "star" that I do not have any idea the orientation or order of. I did not know that Honda made a 600 sedan in 1973 and sold it in the US. Does the plate on your door frame indicate a 1973 manufacture date? I thought the Honda Civic was the only car by Honda available in the US starting in 1973 (with a 4 cylinder 1170 cc engine).

The manufacture date of my car is 1972, when i first got it in 1985 I went to insure and register it. the insurance company insisted it was a 1973 according to their info and since the insuarance company did that the DMV did the same thing when they registred it. We now better.

That's not true at all. There's 3 different boosters for sedan. The first one used was made by Bendix and is all black. The vacuum can is black steel and the cylinder is cast iron.
The 2nd type is the one you have with aluminum canister, 3 bolts holding the cylinder to the plate and breather on the bottom.
The third type almost matches up with the coupe booster, steel canister, breather on the top, sedan has 1 inlet and 1 outlet.
Coupe is almost the same internal parts except since it mounts on the opposite side of the air filter housing the vacuum inlet is reversed as well as the steel canister has the piping on the other side. 1 inlet and 2 outlets. The mounting brackets for all the boosters are different.
There are no parts available for any of them. I used to buy 10 or 15 used ones at a time from Tim Mings and scavenge all the parts to rebuild a couple good ones. The brass sleeving alone was costing me $135 wholesale since there are 3 steps in the 1972 booster style.
The rubber large diaphram from the 3 bolt type and the 2 bolt type are the same if you pop it off the center piston/flange. I used to get the pistons rechromed and the pull rod reman in brass, I found 1 9/16" seal to replace the 14mm seal and did an upgrade to help prevent fluid from leaking in to the large canister which is what kills these things.
I quit rebuilding them as I ran out of parts and was no $$ in them, each one takes 4 hours from start to finish and they came out looking like a new original (almost) from Honda. I didn't sell many as the price was around $350 ea.
Check with Mike Oconnor to see if he is rebuilding them.

Miles is spot on. The later units were costly to restore as the cylinder pistons would wear and have to be rechromed (and that is jewel chrome) to have them back to original specs. The Bendix type are easier to have rebuilt as the parts seem (with exception to the diaphragm) to be interchangeable with other Bendix units. Honda recommended the booster to be rebuilt annually, go figure how many had that maintenance item completed. The last booster I restored cost just shy of $500.00 with all the sleeving, plating and rechroming that had to be redone. And, after you go to all that trouble, you really need to think about using DOT5 brake fluid, or changing the DOT3 stuff every year. Don't forget the other parts that are associated with the brake system, they too will need extensive restoration work to function properly. Honing rear cylinders will do nothing to help them seal. The aluminum castings need to be brass sleeved and nothing else will make them operate like new without performing that function. Check with White Post restorations http://www.whitepost.com/ is advertising in Hemmings Motor News to be able to rebuild your brakes.

Miles, all my parts in in perfect condition including the chrome bore, I just need the orientation of the rubber cups on the shaft. Do you have any breakdown or pics of a piston shaft with the cups installed?
