I'm not sure how it works on the sellers end, but would it save PayPal fees if you took a Money Order? I've been a member of eBay since about 1998 and never did register with PayPal. Well before the auction ends, I'll send a message asking if they'd accept a Cashier's Check [free at my Federal Credit Union] or a Money Order. I also mention I've got good feedback. 99% of that works.

As an ebay buyer, I dread having to send anything in the mail to get an item.  It adds a week at least to the process, takes time to process, costs money.  And where DID I put those stamps?  If I buy something online when I am not home, I then have to remember to actually put that letter in the mail later, and my memory is not perfect.  As a seller (rare for me), the time element is still there, and I would also say that the 3% or so is the price to pay for NOT having to go to the bank every time someone buys any little thing.
Yes there are other issues with paypal - you gotta pick your challenges I guess.

I would never pay check/money order/cash again.  that is what happen to me when I bought my car.  I paid cash and paypal would not help me (of course) when I tried to go after the guy that sold me my car.  (no rust, rebuilt engine, etc.) Well he lied to me.  so I learned my lesson the hard way.  the car is in good shape now but with a lot more work than what I wanted to do.

I agree, there are people that feel they have to lie to sell something.
People on e-bay, Craig's list, the guy down the street all have the capability of telling you a lie.  I have personally had Honda 600 owners bring their cars to me and saying that the engine was rebuilt.  One engine had lag bolts (wood screws) holding the side covers on.  It was a mess, but to him it had been rebuilt.  He wasn't telling a lie, he just didn't know the difference.
Another owner brought his car over and wanted help to put in new rings, well when the cylinder was removed two rings were broken, the cylinders were a mess and the head gasket was leaking oil out the back of the engine.  I told him what it needed, but he said, no to the required work, (to much money)  all he wanted to do is replace the rings and maybe a hone on the cylinders and put it back together.  So, that is what he we did, a hone, new rings and sealed back up.  Two years later he passed away, the car sat until his wife sold it and after changing hands a few times it came back to me.  The new owner was told that the engine had been rebuilt, my name was passed on as the person that could verify this.
(see where things are going)  I showed him the work sheet that listed what had done and when.  Then we pulled the engine and did it right, added an oil cooler and the car is running to this day.
But, the unknowing wife of the owner who had the original work done, said what she thought was the truth, no lie intended.  And, that word was passed from new owner to new owner for years.
So, this is the plight of the car buyer, some one knows the truth, but maybe not the person you are purchasing it from.

eBay has required sellers to accept PayPal as a payment method OR another electronic form of payment and the ONLY way we can advertise that we take CASH is if it is in PERSON such as in a sale of a vehicle or other item to be picked up in person.
I remember back in 1998 when I started selling on eBay, people sent me cash in the mail, money orders and checks from people I knew. I offer people parts at discounted prices if you buy direct bypassing eBay but I still like PayPal as the money accumulates in my account and I can use my PayPal debit card to buy gas & food drawing money off my account and when used as a Credit transaction, they pay me a percentage each month deposited back in to my account.

Bill you are so right except the guy that sold me mine said he rebuilt the motor and cleaned the gas tank, etc.  it is buyer beware.... by the way the guy that sold it to me is hardly ever around anymore, none of the regulars here.   Wish I had the money to buy a real show car.  lol..

Tom;
    You, no, anyone, can bring any car to the show.  Local events are the most fun.  But check with the Judges as most events have a list of required areas to look at.  However the basics are; First, is it there, next is it clean, factory hose clamps and lots of little things that take time but make it show ready.  And, clean, clean, clean.  Normal preps for a show have me pulling the engine on a Honda 600.  Changing out all the clamps, springs, bolts, because CAD and Zinc plating deteriorates so fast.  Then polish everything.  Cars are large DCU's  (Dust Collection Units),  just sitting under a cover can find them filled with dust, then when moisture gets on it, it becomes mud.  And aluminum (the stuff these engines are made of) exfoliates, (corrodes due to dissimilar metals) yes, the bolts that are supposed to be Gold CAD plated are that way for more reasons than simple esthetics.  Steel and Aluminum corrode due to electrolysis, the more of it you have touching each other the more corrosion you have.
 So, take your car to the show and show it.  More and more shows are including a survivor class, for original untouched vehicles.
