my 1970 n600 won't move.

Post by jp.voll »

Hello all, I just wanted to see if any of you could help me figure out my problem.
A couple weekends ago, I was taking the 600 around my neighborhood to warm it up before taking it out. After the car got all warmed up and running well, i took it for another lap just to be sure. About a quarter of the way, the car started acting like the clutch was slipping a little, but I kept going, then it got progressively worse to the point where i couldn't make it up a small hill and got stuck 3/4 the way up! well, I pushed the car home and tried to move it in my driveway.
When you let the clutch out, the car tries to move, but it wont budge. It barely catches, it seems like all the wheels are in holes and it cant power out of them. Since my car developed this problem, I thought it was the clutch slipping. I checked the old friction disc and the rest of the clutch, the oil seal is not leaking and there is no apparent reason for the problem.
I purchased a new friction disc and installed it and that did not fix the issue. After that didn't solve the issue, I purchased a pressure plate off of ebay thinking that the diaphragm spring wasn't producing enough presure. Installed that, exact same problem.
I was hoping that someone from this board or 2cylinderhondas would know what the issue is and be able to instruct me on what I needed to do to fix the problem. I am mechanically adept, but I was trying to see if there was anything I could do to not have to drop the engine and open the case.
Thanks in advance for all your advice!

Make sure that you have not stripped a wheel hub on the front end.  What I would always find people would never torque them properly and then cause the driveshafts to slop around and eventually strip out. Then the car will just sit there and not move.
Take the hub caps off the car so that you can see the large nut on the hub and have someone put the car in gear.  If you see the nut turning and not the whole wheel assembly then there’s your problem.

1970 sedan has round primary damper rubbers. Better stop trying to run it til you check that as your oil pump screen will be full of rubber particles and you aren't pumping oil to the top end. Fries your camshaft.
Most sedans had the upgrade already to the trapezoidal primary, but theres still a few oldies out there. You will need another primary driven assy complete and various other parts once you look see whats in there. No special tools needed but you will have to remove left motor mount bolt and carb and jack up the left side of engine to remove 3 bottom bolts in primary cover.
