seat pockets
seat pockets
Hi I have two 1972 Z coupes. One has pockets on the insides of the front seats and the other one does not. I first thought this was added by the previous owner but looking for pictures on the web I have seen them on another car. Are they crude cup holders? Anybody have information on this difference. Thanks Bill

Re: seat pockets
The problem was simple, if the lap belt slipped between the seat and the tunnel, it was not easy to retrieve, especially if you were sitting in the seat. The solution, slip the latch into the pocket on the opposite seat back. A brilliant but perhaps rarely if ever used convenience Don B. Laughton Sent from my iPhone

Re: seat pockets
Those pockets were standard equipment on new Z600 coupes. I have them on my coupes but I am not sure if they were present on every coupe ever sold in the USA. If you look at the parts book for the coupe you will see the pocket showing on the front seat. Why were they present? Well, look around the car and tell me where you would keep a pen, some change, a small flashlight. The only storage area would be the glove box and in 1972 the ash tray was probably full of ashes. Unlike todays cars, most vehicles of this era did not think about nearby storage for your things.
When the seats would wear out and get recovered, these pockets were usually not added back on the seat. The pattern you see in the seats was a very common pattern which is still available today in the event you want your seats recovered. Well, let me modify that statement ......when I had some seats reworked 5 years ago the person doing the work claimed it was a pattern readily available and showed me his catalogs of all the stuff available for just about every car ever made.
