Just wondering…
According to the wiring diagram, I see that the three wires running from the generator to the rectifier have a common source. Why are there three of them? Or is there something the diagram does not show?

Ya seems like a different kind of plug would have been a much better design for this connection. I'm curious to hear input on what others have to say.

The generator/dynamo is really a 3 phase alternator. The stator has 3 windings(wiggly lines in sketch) creating a sin wave. The diodes( one way devices) in the rectifier convert the sin/alternating current to direct current.

The common source is the stator. The stator has three separate windings. Each one produces some current. All three need to be combined to make enough current to charge the battery and run the vehicle electrical system. The alternator makes A/C current. The job of the rectifier is to turn the A/C into D/C so that the battery will charge.
There's more to this, but I hope the "nutshell" version will help some to understand what's going on.
Bottom line here is that the charging system on these cars is a bit undernourished. It tends to be running at a maximum all the time. This creates heat. The heat "cooks" the connections. The connections need to be clean and tight to keep the charging system working well.
