72 HONDA 600 STARTING PROBLEM

Just wanted to know if someone can help me with this problem. I move my
honda from my garage to the front of the street, and then turn off the car.
When I was going to move it again it didnt start???every time I hit the
ignition it just clunks, like a clunk noise as if the egine was stuck or
something. Anyone one have any Ideas what this might be about. It went from
working fine to nothing. =( Help. Thanks

Well, you'll need to check the easy things, such as battery.... if you determine that your bat. and connections are good, then you'll want to investigate farther down the system. Start checking things like the cable that goes into the starter. Just a week ago there was a guy having problems where the bolt that attaches this cable actually stripped out the hole, and was not getting proper voltage to the starter. If you speculate that the engine is not turning, try turning the engine manually (disconnect the spark first!!!).
Have you tried putting the car in neutral as compared to just pushing in the clutch? If the clutch cable broke or came undone, perhaps the starter couldn't overcome the weight of the engaged transmission and subsequently the car. These are just some ideas. Let us know what you find...

Hi Erik;
Reggie is correct on checking the works. But I would be a bit more
specific. The battery cables are great for this, as is the small
wire to the starter. If these are ok, then move to checking out the
battery or try giving it a jump. On the worst side of it, put the
car in second and push it to see if it will start. But I will bet it
is the battery or one of it's cables.

actually the battery is good and i tried push starting it but i guess im not
pushing hard enough cause it worn start either. I hope its just a starter
problem and not my engine. All wires look good. I might take the starter out
and have it rebuilt. What do you guys think.

You know you may have missed something but first, is it turning over at ALL, and if so is it making a "thunking sound". If it isn't turning over then you are on the right track HOWEVER read below.
"I know it sounds like a worn record" but you could have jumped the chain. This is how mine went out running I parked it at home and then I went to start and it wouldn't. If this is the case, you have bent the valves. If they jam right you cannot get it to release compression and again it will have a hard time turning over with the starter, if at all, and will be hard to push. Mine turned over to easy instead of harder this time.

Yes, it is important to know, does it turn at all, or does it move the engine a shade and then stop? You could have somebody else look at the fan while you try and start it. if the fan moves a little, or somewhat twitches, then perhaps the resistance is internal, and the starter is okay. Ken makes a good point about the chain jumping, and it is more than possible for it to do that. If your hopping in the car with it rolling, then putting it in gear and popping the clutch to try and start it, can you hear it pop over? Or does it seem to lock the front wheels up, and stop immediately? You should probably investigate more before spending money to have a possibly still good starter rebuilt (although it probably never hurts). Try to compile as much info as possible, and post it. With guys like Bill running around, you should be able to get this figured out...

Hi Erik;
Try turning the crankshaft over with a 17 mm open end wrench. It
should turn all the way around smoothly. If it still is catching and wont
budge, I had an occurance where I busted a ring and only after a few days
did it finally catch in such a way that it stopped the engine from turning.
And, yes, the starter didn't move it either. And when I think back it
caught and made a clunk sound when I tried to start it. But it would not
turn over with the wrench either.

Well after taking the starter out and having it check out and rebuild my car
started up again, I guess the starter and the silenoids got messed up
inside...but I dont know what happen that it did the same thing again only
after a couple of turns, so its back to the shop..=(..let you guys know if I
find anything else wrong with it after I take out the starter again.
