cleaning gold zinc parts?

Post by mterrens »

Can anyone suggest a cleaning regimen for gold-zinc or gold-cad plated parts?  I want to clean these bits without scrubbing off the plating.  So far, I am either not getting the crud off, or removing the finish.
Thanks,
Steve

This worked for me on a few pieces I had (non-automotive).
Try a jewelery cleaner that cleans silver, gold, etc. If it doesn't clean it, there is a high chance that a clear coating has been applied over the gold plating to retard tarnishing. The clear coating might even be the surface layer thats making the gold plate look bad. Find a paint remover (chemical) that doesn't require scraping or sanding. This will avoid damage to the gold plating. Try a test spot in a inconspicuous place. It would be smart to let the test area set for a day, after coating removal, to see if there is any type of delayed reaction to the gold plating. If all is well, proceed with the rest of the item, then clean the gold plating and finally re-clear coat the gold plate. Avoid getting oils from your hand on the gold plate after cleaning and before the clear coat is applied.

Hi Steve;
Only one way, clean and get them replated.  Because the zinc or cad is already gone on the threads anyway.
