Running your engine without a fan, you can do that.  But I wouldn't, in fact, I have put oil coolers on Honda 600's because of the heat that is not removed by the fins (loaded with dirt) a fan that is not sufficient after there are a number of miles on the car.  Heat creats wear, more heat more wear.....   I ran a test of engine oil temp by having a oil drain plug made to accept a oil temp sending unit and watch the temp of the engine oil during different dirving conditions.   Freeway driving the engine oil stayed at roughly 170 to 180, 5 minutes off the freeway and at the first stop light, it was hitting 250 to 280.  And that was with a fan attached and running properly.  With a oil cooler it gets up to 190, and I have not observed it getting higher on or off the freeway or during in town driving.

Interesting post! Years ago when parts were dirt cheap I tried
running w/o a fan,and it does run a little better,but you better not
get stopped in traffic! I overheated and damaged a rebuilt motor.
Seems the wrist pins were the only thing that wore out. Motor
started clicking badly,so I shut it down in time before further
damage.Theres not enough airflow over the fins w/o the fan at slow

I asked the previous owner about the missing fan and he said he had no
idea. Evidently it has been missing for over 20 years and driven that
way quite a bit. I have been considering doing the oil cooler, but am
wondering if that would be enough or should I still try to locate a
fan replacement?

I had a sedan in the early 90's in Laguna Hills califonia that I bought with no fan.  I modified a small electric made a few mounts and wired it in so it ran when the engine was running.  worked great and cost elss than 100.00.  I have been considering gutitng one of my housings and inserting an electric in the stock housing..... that could work too.....
