spark plug condition
spark plug condition
Here is a picture of a NGK-R BR8ES spark plug, just pulled from my Coupe. Gap is .030, which agrees with most web mentions. Any opinions of it's condition? They both look like this.

Steve;
Check the rocker arms for to tight. You may have a valve that is just a smidge open.

Why would a lack of clearance cause the condition observed in the pics?

Re: spark plug condition
A little more on the plug.
The flaking your seeing is carbon deposits that were blasted apart from what looks like the beginning of detonation. If you adjust your valves on a warn rocker arm shaft and torque it to tight the rocker can move to the tighter side. Use a feeler guage to check it out. Because when your engine heats up metal expands and your valves may not be closing all the way. You may even experiance a back fire when turning off the engine. I would look at the valves first, then timing and with timing the points breaker plate for wear.
The color of the plug is from additives in the fuel, nothing you can do about that other than switch fuel. Saw a lot of that on plugs in the late 70's from MMT fouling.

Re: spark plug condition
Sorry but I disagree.
Too little clearance on the exhaust rocker will result in leaking of the mixture past the exhaust valve, reducing effective compression ratio and leaving less mixture in the combustion chamber and therefore less heat. I would expect the exhaust valve to overheat and burn.
Too little clearance on the intake rocker would result in possible backfire into the intake manifold and again less effective combustion taking place in the cylinder. So I see no reason for the spark plug to overheat. A spark plug that runs too hot will blister and erode both the center and ground electrodes.
The spark plug in the picture shows clear signs of deposit formation from additives in the fuel or oil consumption. Oil consumption leads to ash formation in the early stages and later the gap can be bridged from the oily deposits.
Thanks for your reply.

Re: spark plug condition
I promise to check the clearances soon, and will report my findings. I will be doing a "by the book" tuneup following Chap 2 in the "big blue" shop manual.
A question about the compression test: the book calls for the "choke and throttle valve to be in the fully open position".
Does this mean foot-on-the-gas? Will this not result in gas piling up, what with no spark plugs connected? Sorry if this is clear to everyone but me... Oh, and, is it possible to do this test by myself? I've got a cheap autozone compression tester.

Re: spark plug condition
Actually, doing the test with the throttle and especially the choke wide open will prevent excessive gas from being sucked into the cylinder. At cranking speed the air flowing through the carb is so low that the venturi effect is minimal, so no venturi effect, no fuel flow. Also at WOT there is no engine vacuum to suck fuel out of the idle circuit. If you want to be sure not to suck fuel into the engine then prior to performing the test pull the fuse for the fuel pump, start the engine and let it run until it dies from lack of fuel. I would still block the throttle open though.
If the compression tester screws into the spark plug hole then yes you can do the test yourself. With both plugs removed you will easily notice when the cylinder which has the tester screwed into it comes up on compression as the starter will labor noticeably. Crank it until you hear that happen 3 times and usually that will be as high as the compression will go.
Good luck.

Re: spark plug condition
Steve;
Splurge, pick up one of the Sears quick connect compression testers. Don't worry about the gas, it is not much. Just follow the instructions that come with the tester.
