71 N600 / blown engine

Got a 71 N600 that is in pretty good shape overall. Blew the motor
last week. Believe that it is result of low oil (however dipstick
never read low). Anyhow, got what I think was about $4,000 dollar car
with a blown motor. Live in socal (near LAX). Quotes I have gotten so
far are about $3500 for complete rebuild. Not too crazy about that
because car will still only be worth about $4,000 running. I think I
could part it out and make 1,500 to 2,000. Hate to do that because it
is complete and pretty good little car. I have rebuilt a VW motor and
a american engine before (been a while). I think I could rebuild this
motor myself, but specific specs and parts are not readily available to
me. Would be ready to tackle the project if there are rebuild kits
available with information. Dont want to learn any expensive lessons
the hard way. I want to get out of this pickle without loosing much
more money and not destroying a car. You guys got any suggestions?

Hey Harper
when i bought my car last year the guy told me he rebuilt the motor and
that was the reason i bought it.. Well it turned out he did not rebuild
it so i am now having B&B automotive in Washington state do the work
that should have been done before. If you enjoy driving it like i do
mine than have the motor rebuilt. if it is just another car, it may
not be worth it. I am looking at around $2500 that i was not planning
on. Well that money was going into the body and paint.. Next year for
that i guess..
Keep the car and enjoy it..

I have a good lower-end needs oil pump and top rebilt make offer.

My bottom half is frozen but top looks good. How do the pistons look
on yours? What kind of price are you wanting for bottom end?
