I had my coupe in a local show over here in San Diego, it was mostly tuners, lots of wild paint and speed items. But I still came in second in class.
Really a tough venue, but many of them skipped a few really obvious hits and came up far behind in the judging. And, please tell us how you did at the show.
If it's your first time showing, here are a few tips so you will take home a prize.
Display the following:
Owners Manual, Shop Manual, Parts Manual, and Sales Brochures.
Tools
Fire Extinguisher
Window Sticker
History of vehicle and pictures of your restoration.
Do the following: the judge looks for two things, is it there? is it clean?
Engine and engine compartment - super clean, and have everything there. Fresh paint, wet looking rubber and clean or new labels. If there are holes in the metal area, put a screw or bolt in it. Don't leave anything to question. Use polish and detail spray products to make everything look new. Use factory parts as much as possible including clamps and other fasteners.
Interior of the car, clean, fresh, carpet mats removed, carpet clean and little or no wear marks. Head liner clean and not showing age or glue marks. Same goes here, close up all the holes, clean under the dash, keep the wires and wire harnesses under the metal clamps and clips. Put on new peddle covers.
Under carriage, clean it up, use tire shine products, I like one touch on all of the wheel wells, and wash it, get the dirt off. Products like POR15 can really make your sub frame look new again. Jack it up and pull the wheels and clean every thing. If your rims are looking a bit on the well used side, I repaint them with just a bit of work. Wash them good, cut the bottom 6 inches off a T shirt and you can use a flat screw driver to push it under the edge of the rim to protect the tire, tape the valve stem and use silver paint, I like the stuff they say is chrome. Looks more like factory silver.
Last, clean and polish the paint and chrome, use a tooth brush to get all the dried polish off and make it shine. Don't forget the trunk and spare tire area and the gas filler door, cap and filler tube area. And wax the windows.
When you get to your area where you are going to display your car, bring along a couple of towels, some quick touch spray, a shop brush to clean the grass out of the tire tread, and pick out the stones. Use a lint roller on the carpets and touch up the foot mat. Put out your display items (I tape the window sticker on the window and lay the books out on the seats) and wait for the judges.
Normally judges can't touch your car, so if the hood has to be open, you have to do it. They should only go down on one knee to look at the under side of your car. I just open everything. Then just stand back and keep your mouth shut. Let the judges do their work. If they ask a question, answer it, don't give them the life of the car. If you start apologizing for every little mark they may not have seen, you are going to give it away.
Points is the name of the game, most judges use the "Every thing starts as a full count for that area, like 25 points for the exterior, and they deduct for each down mark. Your score is what's left. If the engine compartment is 15 points and your lid is down, you get "0 points". The Judges normally have a set time allowed to judge a group of cars, they don't have much time and if your windows are up and doors closed that is less for them to do.

This is not a judged show.
This is the place the major manufacturers
drop millions of dollars to show off their new cars, and their concept cars. The microcar exhibit was down the lobby from the Lamborghinis and other exotics. I imagine that the microcar club was invited to display the cars for "public interest", or an amusement, or a history lesson, or something. In any event, the idea of owning and appreciating microcars got a LOT of exposure - many thousands saw it and many hundreds stopped to look and talk, just in the one day I was there. My job was to answer questions (I had to brush up as I didn't know any of them) and make sure kids don't climb on the cars. At least 300 times (literally), from kids and adults alike, the question " Is that the Erkel car ?" (referring to the Isetta) was asked. Dozens of folks recognized the Peel P50 as being the car Jeremy on "Top Gear" drove into his office at the BBC. The exhibit got a full page of coverage in the Daily News and the local Fox news weatherman took the Peel for a drive down the hall (as it spewed oily exhaust on the carpet).
