z600 CHG light
I have a 1972 Honda z600 coupe for about a year now, I just notice my (CHG) light is on. What does this mean?

Something is wrong with your battery or charging system. Test the battery first then suspect the voltage regulator. I have a regulator I can sell to you if you need one.

Re: z600 CHG light
I'm not sure what u mean. The easiest way to test is to put a volt meter across battery and rev the engine up and hold it. If the voltage never goes over 12 volts then it could be your regulator. Do u have a volt meter?

Re: z600 CHG light
Just a suggestion but you might consider removing the regulator and taking it to an automotive electrical shop. There they can probably check the diodes and possibly give you some suggestions.

Re: z600 CHG light
The diodes are not in the regulator. The diodes are a separate module which is actually a six diode full-wave bridge rectifier circuit. To properly test the bridge rectifier you should use an AC source and a scope or multimeter.

Re: z600 CHG light
True. Something an experienced shop may be able to help with as well as checking out the regulator. It would be nice to know which component is actually faulty before spending $250.

Re: z600 CHG light
All;
You folks really need to read the books available from Honda. Section 17 of the Sedan shop manual pages 17-19 through 17-30 covers the electrical components you are asking about. If it seems over whelming after reading up then a good auto electric shop should be your next direction. But, ask the question - "Do you know what a Honda 600 car is?" don't put yourself into the situation of letting a well intentioned mechanic learn on your car. Then your paying some one to learn, and they should know what they are doing from the start. So, do some home work, search the shops or find someone who has owned a Honda 600 in the past and has use a shop in the area.
What ever you do, don' t try and talk some one into doing the job, if they say "I don't know...." leave it at that and look for another shop.
Hope this helps.
Bill
