If you measure the resistance between the two wires coming from the alternator brush housing (white/red stripe and black wires), it should be reading about 5 ohms. You are mainly looking for a low reading. If you get a very high reading, your brushes are not making good contact and something may need to be cleaned or replaced.
Coming from the alternator casing (front side) will be 4 wires ...... 3 white and 1 white/black stripe. If you measure the resistance between any white wire (going into the alternator) and the white/black stripe wire (going into the alternator), you should see a resistance which is less than 1 ohm. On an inexpensive meter, it may look like it is reading as a short (near zero) .... this is OK. All 3 measurements (between each white and the white/black stripe) should be giving readings which appear the same since they are measuring the 3 windings of the alternator which should be identical.
The most common cause of a failure on the Honda 600 charging system is a poor electrical connection (usually at the brushes and where the connectors plug into each other).
When making resistance measurements with your meter, ensure the power is off. If you are not sure, disconnect one of your cables at the battery.
