What is the deal with the carve needing to be absolutely level? What happens when climbing a steep hill?

NObody said ABSOLUTELY level. As you might know the intake manifold comes off the head at quite angle and the tendency is to mount the carb inline with the manifold. You just need to use an adapter to get the carb as level as possible. That is how a float works in a carb. No brainer.

Just saying it runs better than it did before and parts are EZ to find.  You can do a wheelie on a bike, steeper than any hill.

I own Honda 600's and I use one as a daily driver half of the year.
I do all of my own mechanical work on them. I'm not claiming to be an expert but I'm not a beginner either.
I do have a brain and I do use it.
Yes, I do know how carb's work.

It sounds great!
I've rebuilt several carbs and two of them worked flawlessly for years. But eventually the wear on the parts makes them difficult to dial-in even after an elaborate rebuild process.
So, did you hook the Harley carb up to the original airbox or do you have a different air filter?
What did you do with the hose from the valve cover to the airbox? Did you leave that in place?
Sorry to jump on this so late. I've been busy with work and school and have been ignoring the forums for months. ;o)

Sweet!
It's interesting that you are using a 40mm Harley carb.
There was a 40mm carb on some of the 600's but I've only seen pictures and a few pieces of one in person.
I have a 600 carb that I got from Miles Chappell awhile back.
I'm planning to pull it apart and rebuild it this weekend.
Hopefully, a rebuilt carb will fix my current problem.
