Small Oil Leak

Post by baldwin_elias »

I have a small but steady oil leak inside the points cover from what appears to be the end of the cam. My parts car has the same slow ooze of oil in this area. I am assuming this is a common issue and some seal in there has gotten tired. Anybody know what my issue might be? I'm looking for a better fix than what the previous owner tried: sealing up the points cover with red gasket sealer to make the whole thing "oil tight." Pretty sure the points aren't supposed to be in an oil bath!

Brake Check Valves

Post by friend »

In the past few weeks there has been some discussion on master cylinders failing because of the check valve, not true .
First, drum brakes use check valves to give them a stronger (firm) peddle.  They are made to retain about 6 to 8 psi in the lines to the brake wheel cylinders.  Disc brakes don't need them, this is the reason that there is a metal washer above the check valve in the front section of the master cylinder, it's used to maintain fluid in the line not pressure.  If there was pressure in the lines for the front calipers they would drag and they would wear quickly.    However the rear section of the master cylinder check valve has a rubber seal on top of it which allows it to maintain pressure in the lines to the shoes in the rear drums.
Even if the check valves do not function, there will be brake peddle.  So, if you are having problems, as has already been said, check out the whole system.
