z 600 Coupe quit running

Post by Fred »

I was driving down the road the other day and my car started sputtering a little bit then ran fine for another 10 miles pulled into a store and thought it might be a fuel issue but it wasn't got it started again but it ran really really rough I wasn't able to keep it running very long so I trailer it home the spark seems to be really weak not sure if it would be the coil or not tried to check the timing with the light bulbs method but it would not go out no matter how many times I turn to crank any and all feedback would be appreciated thanks guys

Fred - first suggestion would be to open the cover to the points and condenser (if you haven't already done so) and make sure that the points are opening and closing visibly. While at it, check that the point gap is at spec (.012-.016 inch). If the gap has closed up partially or all the way, adjust the point gap and try starting again. (Then adjust the timing if you do end up getting it started.)
If it doesn't start after all that and you still get a weak/no spark, you can try changing to new points and condenser. If that doesn't fix it, I'd be inclined to suspect the coil, but you might want to check the wiring between the coil, points housing, and plugs before getting another coil.
Nice thing about the 600 cars is that they're super-simple, so there's only so many things to check. As you said, the other thing to think about would be a fuel issue, but if you know you're getting a weak spark, I'd concentrate on that area first, as that would seem to be the problem area.
Good luck with it!

Another thing to check would be that you're getting a solid 12 volts DC to the coil input with the ignition switch turned to the "running" position. A volt-ohm meter will come in handy here.
From the scenario you describe, I'd be a bit more inclined to suspect something other than a voltage drop to the coil input, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

check to see if the points are coming apart when you turn the crank.
just my 2 cents.

This sounds like your points have simply closed up or that there is some debris that has accumulated on them. I would check and regap the points before replacing coils. If that does not help, check the condenser before the coil, as it is a more likely fault.
