EV

Post by T W S »

Just wondering if anyone has looked into making an EV out of one of these cars. Ive been trying to research and see its been done using part of the stock transaxle. There was one on Utube in Mexico where they used a Geo Metro transaxle. Where im at its kind of pointless to deal with a stock engine and im pretty sure i could get the car to scoot if i could stuff an electric motor to the transaxle somehow. Anyone?? thanks, Tim

I have the remnants of  Honda Z600 EV, so yes, it can be done, battery storage would be a problem I'm sure and may be why this project was abandoned

hi Mark, it looked like there wasnt enough there to determine how the motor was placed. (Your car body looks like its in pretty workable condtion by the way). I recently picked up a Z600 body shell from Ray Cave that was about the same shape. If it works out, id like to put a motor in front and somehow split that engine transmission assembly and mount the motor up there. Ive studied a lot of other cars to see how they did thier conversions but this car is a lot smaller and the transmission is problematic due to how its constructed. will see what more info i can gleen. Thanks, Tim

Hi Tim,
Used engines do turn up periodically or you could have yours rebuilt by a competent motorcycle mechanic.. Certainly, it would be a lot easier than sourcing all the parts for an EV conversion and doing all ofnthe modification necessary to make it work properly. The proper engine rebuild may cost more but the original car will be a whole lot more valuable than an EV conversion in the end.
Where are you located, and do ou have a bad engine or no engine at all? Don't get discouraged. Just be persistant and something will turn up. Mike O'Conner often sells used and rebuilt engines lthough they can be pricey.

hi Chas, I do have a Z600 that sometime down the road i will end up restoring. My situation is that i had bought one with rusted out floor pans and its got a siezed motor with a big hole in the front of the engine block. (motor is siezed) Just before winter set in i made a road trip and got a new body shell . So ill be gutting the first one out and using most of the parts for the shell i got. I have about enough stuff to just about finish it including another rebuildable engine but this electic car conversion is something that im pretty set on doing-unless i cant get the targeted range and speed im looking for. I have a brother who said if i wanted to do it hed fund a conversion kit with  except possibly the batteries but will see.

If you do decide to convert please post. I'm going to run my Z600 till the engine gives up the ghost (catastrophic mechanical failure). Then do the conversion to electric drive. I bought the Z with this in mind. But the damn car is 42 years old and still running strong so this might be a ways away.

im pretty set on doing an EV conversion to my Z600. i have to figure out if theres a way i can separate the transaxle from the engine. I really dont want to be cutting and resizing CV axles to the narrow width of the car. And i need it to do at least 55 and get some kind of range out of it too. Will see

You know, there was a Honda 600 owner who mounted an electric motor on top of the engine case and had a chain drive to the crankshaft incorporating the original crankshaft with bearings and clutch to the transmission and had all four forward gears and reverse.  It looked as if he put a plate over he cylinder area and used it as a mounting for the electric motor.  Maybe he is still part of the group or some one remembers him.

Stu Horn, of Long Island, NY did this. The power plant is a repurposed DC-4 starter motor pumped up to 72v.  The motor goes directly to the transmission main shaft (the crank is there to keep the oil in I guess).  It's out in my shed, waiting for attention.  I have pictures (old fashioned film), have yet to scan them.
