Fuel Additives

Hello. I have a Z600 that I was told might have old gas in the tank
and could use a carb cleaning as it sat for sometime not being used
but very occassionally. I also heard that this product called
Seafoam is an excellent gas tank additive that can clean carbs, etc.
Has anybody ever used a fuel additive in a Z600 and is it safe for
the engine? Any info would be much appreciated.

I have used seafoam in my carburated Festiva with no
issues. Well, the exhaust smells kinda funky, but
that's about that.
As for functionality, well, I can make no promises
taht any of that crap really works. I rebuilt that
Festiva carb about a month after running the Seafoam,
and I was genuinely impressed with how clean the carb
was with 200k original miles on it, but I can't say
whether it was the Seafoam or not that made it so
clean. But it sure can't hurt anything, and it is a
good water remover, so sure, run it.

Thanks. My only concern is that it might hurt the 2 cyclinder engine
somehow. The can acually says it works on just about anything and it
can even be dumped into the crank case, but I just thought it might
clean the carb some and make my otherwise perfect Z600 run better.

Most of the so-called fuel additives on the market are a waste of money, However, the one item I use on a regular basis is "Berrymans Chemtool"...It can be purchased at nearly any parts store, and it is available in aerosol, for exterior or disassembled parts cleaning (do not use on painted parts) or a liquid form which can be added to a tank of gas to help clean lines, pump, and carburetors...The most important thing I've found over the years, is to avoid fuel with high alcohol content..( Arco is the highest).
The alcohol will help destroy the old style fuel hoses, and speed up the demise of your fuel pump and rubber parts in the carb!

Hi Rich;
Cleaning anything that has junk that will flake off and not dissolve will
clog something else. Jets, idle circuits the slide on the variable ventury
or even the screen on the needle valve will all succumb to unresolved chunks
of dried fuel and varnish. So, take it apart, clean it, use solvents that
are made for this purpose. And while it's apart, look for wear. I had a
carb that would not idle for anything, I found that the float was binding
because of a warn float pin. Threads on screw holes stripped and vacuum hose
just clogged. With out looking you will never see the problem. And, if
there is "Dust-Rust" in your tank you will never see that if you just dump
in a can of what ever to clean your system.

Rich, I use Seafoam in all mt rigs. this stuff is awsome. it really
does work. it will clean out the carbon build up too. Due to the
size of our fuel tanks, do not use the whole can in the tank. It will
treat 20 gallons of fuel. Start with the motor running, spray a
little at a time into the carb while running. it will sputter a
little. after about three times of doing this then spray it in till
the engine dies. pour the rest, or about a quarter of the can in the
tank. After about 5 minutes of letting the engine set,re-start it.
the engine will smoke a bit. The more smoke the cleaner it's
getting. the smoke will disapear after a few minutes. You WILL notice
a differance in the performance. If this is a challange then just out
a quarter of a can in the tank and drive the car. I've put a can in
each tank in my F250 in klamath falls, oregon, and drove to portland,
oregon for company meetings and by the time i reached salem, I had
noticed better engine response and mileage. Beside being the best
injector cleaner ever and carbon cleaner, I use it in my snowblower,
lawnmower and my wifes toyota camary. even in my n600 sedan. you cant
go wrong with this stuff. originally made for marine engines, til the
rest of the world discovered what it does. I keep 2 cans in my shop
at all times.
