plugged fuel pipe

I am fixing up a couple of AN600s, and while replacing the rubber fuel
hoses I noticed the metal fuel "pipes" were plugged with black goo.
This is true for both the pipe to the front and the pipe that enters
the gas tank. I have partially reamed them out using carb cleaner and
a braided steel cable, but it feels like I have hit obstructions about
1' in on both pipes. Is there a screen on the intake inside the gas
tank that I could be hitting? I can't blow air into the tank yet. Is
there an easier way to do this? How do I know when I am done? I
assume when I can blow air through the pipe, right?

I use a section of old speedometer cable on a cordless drill and
roto-rooter the clogged fuel line. Works well and you will know when
you are thru clog.
