Tac on sedan engine

Post by iain »

Is ther any way to hook up a tacometer on a sedan engine? Can you
change the flange and hook it in or is there more to it than that?
Thanks.

1)  use an electronic tach which taps into the distributor (similar to the one used for tuneups).  Or you could use an inductive pickup.
2)  use the tach setup from a Honda coupe.  It would require that your camshaft accepts the tach drive gear.  The tach housing will fit on your sedan and you will need the coupe tachometer and cable.

A former Honda 600 owner told me about TinyTach, an easy add-on,
digital tach for many different applications, that he has used for his
vehicle collections. The web site is: http://www.tinytach.com/
I have not yet bought one but think that is the way I'll go when I get
that far. It appears that it can be easily hooked up on a 600.

I took a look at the info on the tinytach and  was not impressed.  Here is why:
1)  It is a digital readout........your brain is better at interpretting an analog tach
2)  the update time on the readout is slow  (2.5 seconds for the standard and 0.5 seconds for the commercial).  This is fine for monitoring red line conditions but worthless for shifting.
Although a tach is not necessary on the 600 vehicles,  it is nice to have to see where you are relative to red line and, if you are in a noisy location,  the tach helps you with shifting.  With regard to shifting,  the rpms run up so quick that an analog display is best (either the dial or a bar graph).
If you do select the tinytach,  remember to purchase the correct one.  The 600 igniton system is different from your normal auto because there is no distributor on the 600 and it fires the plugs on every revolution (fires on the compression and exhaust cycles).   So,  while one cylinder is starting the power stroke,  the other is doing the exhaust stroke and both cylinders are seeing the spark plugs fire.

Dale,
Valid points I hadn't considered. Mostly it seemed like an easy
connect, which appealed to me. I'm used to and like analog tachs, and
have to agree with you, visual signals work faster than having to
interpret the digital readout.
