Was looking for any recommendations for possible cause for no reverse with 71 manual 600. When I move the shift lever into position everything appears fine, just will not go into reverse. Hope it is something as easy as an adjustment in linkage.

Your roll pin where the linkage hooks to the transmission may be to big or loose and hitting against the collar in the body. This will not allow the linkage to go down far enough to engage reverse, but the other gears will still engage fine.

Is this a popular problem? My 71 600N has a similar problem --but not
always. Difficult to get into reverse. Before my time it must have been only
partially engaged and when it jumped out it chipped a gear tooth which you
can hear while backing up. mike in Canada

Mine did it after i changed the motor and lost the roll pin. I replaced it with a bolt, and the head hit the body.

Try shifting with the motor off so you can hear if the gear is engaging.
If linkage checks out, you'll need to get to the gear itself. Honda did a clever thing here, there's a access cover next to the starter. The spedometer cable and reverse switch go in there. It's a real bear, but the cover does come off with engine in the car. You will need a replacement gasket, so cut one or have a spare handy before trying this. Spread some newspaper, it's going to leak a little. Have a friend shift for you, so you can visually see if the gear slides in (left) and fully engages. It's possible the shift yoke retaining tab has broken, and you have no force to move the gearor the gear itself is damaged. Be sure to get a magnet to pick up any bits. In any case, you will definitely know what the problem is.
I once had a friend strip my reverse (never ask someone else to shift into second when pushstarting). For several months, i only parked it where i could pull forward.
