Boy, when I started this back in 2002 I was just hoping to have the
previous subscribers of Novelty News in this group (40 people). As it
grew though it went worldwide. I know there are other forum formats
that are better than Yahoo, but we are all here now and as long as
Yahoo sponsors *groups* we should be able to bond as a family of Honda
owners.
As the group expanded more and more I was hoping to see the day we hit
500 members. Tonight we hit 700 and as far as I can tell the 700th
member was Sprocketford69 who owns 4 600's.
I plan to host a Honda 600 Meet here at my house this year. I haven't
had any for years, but usually had them in October. That might conflict
with the All Japanese Meet in Long Beach Ca though?
I live in Boulder Creek Calif 95006 which is just about 45 minutes from
San Jose Ca. Please email me with best preferred dates for Sept or
October.

Hastings doesn't have all 5 sizes available. Last time I checked they
only had STD, .25mm & .50mm oversizes.
The Honda 600 oil ring is an odd height (2.8mm) compared to other
cars. The compression ring is hard chrome plated and is 2.5mm tall,
The 2nd ring is regular cast iron and is also 2.5mm tall. The oil
ring is 2.8mm tall.
There is a couple models of Civic which have 74mm pistons. The oil
ring is 3 pieces and is 3mm tall so you have to widen the slot in
your piston (a machine shop does it) but you get 4 sets that way and
you have spares. It's cheap for the Civic rings. My 1993 Geo Metro
also had 74mm pistons, but I don't recall what the piston rings
looked like, but the wrist pins were the correct diameter and were in
the correct location, so if you didn't mind low performance (concave
tops) it might run?
Don't forget with the Hastings rings to fit them to your bores before
installing them on the pistons. If the gaps are too tight the engine
may seize, too wide and you will burn oil. I believe the correct gap
is .008" to .012".
Your original bore size is 74mm. First oversize would be 74.25mm,
then 74.50mm etc up to 75mm. 75mm is the largest size ofered by
Honda. Sometimes you can still see the numbers on the tops of the
original rings. On the left side of the ring it will have an N or an
R. On the right side it will have nothing or 25 or 50 or 75 or 100.
If it has nothing it is Standard original size.

Hastings will make other sizes, but you have to order and it took almost 6
months to get .75 overs. Another time I ordered .25 overs and received .50
over oil rings. Miles is right but I like Grinding to fit the best, have
your cylinders bored to match the piston (keep cylinders as straight as
possible some shops like to widen them at the lower end). Then when you
receive your rings put them in your new cylinder bore and slide them up and
down the cylinder to find the closest area. Book calls for the top or
compression ring to be .045 to .075 mm and the second ring and oil ring to
be .015 to .045 mm.
I have my bore one point five thousands over the piston size. And while
the pistons and cylinders are at the shop have them weigh the pistons to get
them both the same weight. All this helps when you want to reduce piston
slap and make your engine to be as quite as possible. I have had brand new
pistons weigh in way different, and it all effects performance.

I may be doing something wrong, my rings measure as follows:
Top= 1.2mm
Mid=1.2mm
Oil=2.2mm
I can easily locate the 74mm bore 1.2mm rings used on a Suzuki engine
SOHC 1.0l(993cc ) or in the 1.3L and in the Honda 1.5L.both
applications come with an oil ring that is 2.8mm.
Can you clarify if the rings needed for the 600 are the 1.2mm for top
and mid and the 2.2mm for oil ??
The hastings catalog Indicates 4 rings 1.5mm and 2 rings 2.5mm
Top= 1.2mm
Mid=1.2mm
Oil=2.2mm
