successful engine swaps?

I've got a non-running 1972 AZ600 coupe. Would it make better sense
(financially and from the standpoint of every day use) to swap drive
trains with a more common/powerful make model than to rebuild the air
cooled unit? I live in Wisconsin, and the parts stores look at me
like I'm making things up when I ask what they have...

it would be cheaper to stay with the stock engine, if you did a swap
it would involve welding new mounts on the body and much more but you
would have much more power,

It always looked (to me) like the 1974 Honda Civic (air cooled, about
a thousand cc ) engine was on the same subframe. Is that not so? I
thought I heard stories of that being a common swap in
Japan. Dangerously fast, but common.

not sure about aircooled but increase of just under 20 hp

~20hp isn't much but it's a whole lot for a 1200lb car.

The parts stores in California always looked at me like that. After a
while I just asked for the parts and didn't tell them what it was for.
Like I need a 16498 starter or a 7425 Gates belt or a set of 428 shoes.
I never tell them anymore the application because there is hardly
anything listed.
There's really nothing that will just bolt in to the 600. Civic
driveshafts are unequal lengths because the trans is off to one side.
Most of the modern day engines use a computer. You will devalue the
car, why not just drive an early Civic if that's the power you seek?
They are still small. The '73 1200 should be all smog exempt in Cali
and you could put larger motors in those or a turbo etc.
Go look on my other group for engine swaps, I think there was some
there, ModMicros.
