Wound up taking gas tank to radiator shop and got it vatted. When
finished he pressured it up. You guessed it, many pin holes in the top. I
had a pk of JB WELD which I put over the worst area and then fiber glassed
the top to the seam. I had the gel which I had never used. It don't go as
far as the thinner glass therefore I didn't get glassed to the seam all
around. I finally got it back on after much cussin and crying. Got
everything hooked back up and on the ground. Started it up and tinkered
with carb for a minute and it was sounding good. Took off and looped the
town a couple times and it was running so sweet I should've know something
was going to go wrong. Got back to house and was
talking to neighbor over the fence when he said I smell gas. Moved the gas
cans to carport and came back and still smelling gas. Checked Connections
at fuel pump & filter --OK Got down on my belly looking up at tank and saw
gas dripping down on the muffler which is full of holes. Was a little
unnerving..
Had all that fun pulling it off again. One small leak at top of seam that
didn't get covered. More JB and got it tight now. Got it back on this
evening but didn't
get in on the ground as I was wore out. 5 hrs easy. test run tomorrow

when I found all the gas leaks in my gas tank I tried the cleaner than the liner stuff you put in after it is clean and dry. I put gravel in the tank to shake it because I could not figure how a chain could get to both sides.. when the rust was gone I put in the cleaner after sealing the hole I could find. well there was a lot of holes and the cleaner went all over the place. after trying a few things I sent it to get renewed and this place http://www.gas-tank.com/ . There are a few places that do this. after about 200 dollars I got my gas tank back and it works fine for me. I know some have had good luck with the other stuff. I do have a can of the liner around some place if anyone needs it.

Tom, I went to our one and only motorcycle shop and he only carried
the older type sealer that was a three step and he only had one can of the three. If he had everything I needed it would have cost over a $100. Fortunately the pin holes were all on top of the tank except for the one on 'the seam. Hope it holds as I sure don't want to take it off/on again.

You really have to think safety here.
Even some of the tank sealers are susceptible to the new alcohol mix we are buying at the pump. I know there are fiberglass gas tanks out there, but I never had much faith in the at home mix if fiberglass. Even JB weld is a good product, but you really have to have the surface super clean for it to work successfully. Or, your asking for more problems. The only product I have had any sustained performance is the stuff from Hirsch Automotive.

The problem is that the tank at that stage is so thin nothing will save it short of replacing the metal. But, I tried some of the Hirsch sealer and it did the trick.
I used a foil tape to give a base for the sealer to fill to and sealed it twice to make sure it was tight. Drove it for a few years before selling it and no problems and no leaks.

Just got back from a pretty good test drive. Ran sweet up to 60mph and that was all the half decent hi-way I had. Checked for leaks and found none but only had about 3 gal. of gas in it. I wouldn't have trusted fiber glass if holes had been on the bottom. For the JB I used 80 grit sand paper to clean and rough it up, to give it sumpin to bite to. Will keep a close look at it every time I add some gas, a couple gallons at a time.

Yes leave the wire in as it dries and pull in and out frequently, or push in and out as drying. The alternative sucks, you have to use a cable and a drill to drill it out and it isn't easy.

not sure about the vent, but the outlet tube is about 12"/14" long - it runs to the sediment depression at the drain plug.
Whatever you insert will generally stop at 12+/-" because that tube makes a 90 degree turn towards the tank bottom.
