recently i picked up a '71 an600 with the idea that it would be a
project. I am trying to figure out what is wrong with the motor. it
starts but is really loud with a knock, slap, pop, and all other
sounds that would entail starting a journey of outdated and
discontinued parts. However, I am within the midst of experts with
this yahoo group. So, if you can please let me know what you're

There are others with much more mechanical know-how here, but I can pretty safely say - don't run that car again until you address the timing and the timing chain! A valve embedded in a piston is not fun at all.

From my experience on other cars, this sounds like a spun rod bearing.
I suppose it could also be valve-to-piston contact.
Either way it isn't good, you're either risking (further) damage to
the rods/crank or bending valves.

I believe these are roller bearing rods - like a Harley. There is a
complete crank with rods available on E-bay now. Engine disassembly
will be necessary. Be sure to check oil pump while you are at it.

to the best of my knowledge the woodgrain is stock, however, i recently picked this car up and it has had 3 previous owners. i think it is stock because it has all the emblems and is a perfect fit with the dash. let us know people if you have seen this before. next time i'm at the car i will get some hi res pics of the dash!

The gauges are from a coupe, and so therefore is the camshaft. It's nicely done, but it didn't come from Japan like that. At least one dealer (Robertson Honda) did custom interiors on new cars.
Back to the engine, possibilities are valves need adjustment, cam chain has slipped or is stretched, and/or the crank is going (or all the above). Have you done a compression test? How much?

That looks like the one my friend Mike H. made. The USA sedan did not
come with a tach. The stock woodgrained dash was stick on vinyl from
what it looks like in the manuals.
