Body Work

Post by Tom Feick »

I think some kids used my Honda 600 Sedan for a trampoline. the roof has so many dents that I can't see how I could fix it. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Tom

My 600 was rolled.   I fixed (covered) the dents with stickers.   Not worth trying to de-dent.

The lady I got my 600 from had a big old goofy son that got mad at her and pounded the roof in with his fists.  I could pop it back up but then it would pop back down
when jarred.  I bit the bullet and got a big sheet of fiberglass and a quart of resin and covered the whole top.  Messy but it kept the roof from popping in and out.  Kinda smoothed up with bondo.
Not showroom quality but worked out pretty good.
One of these days after I paint or get it painted I'll send some pics.

Tom,
You will need to remove the headliner and use a torch and your body work tools to shrink the metal.  If you have never done metal shrinking before,  it will not be easy on these cars since the metal is very thin.  You may want to turn it over to a pro.
You could also try to remove as many dents and creases as possible,  install some metal or wooden
slats across the roof (the slats will help keep the roof bowed outward), and reinstall the headliner.  Then you would use a bondo compound to make the roof appear to be free of dents.  If you have serious stretching of the roof metal (which is how it is sounding),  you need to do the metal shrink.  If you don't have much experience with doing metal shrinking and you want to do it yourself,  I suggest you practice on a scrap vehicle (or hood) which has greater thickness than the 600 cars.  On the 600,  you need enough heat so you can shrink the metal but not so much heat that you punch a hole through the metal.  And you will need to work quickly before the heat dissipates.
good luck,
Dale

Just did a bunch of body work to my little sedan. I was able to shrink
many panels using an industrial heat gun and ice. The area I tried with a
torch did not go to well. I would suggest trying a propane torch over oxy
accet. set up.

You don't need a torch or even a lot of skill.  There is the off dolly method that will put your roof back in shape.  I have done a number of them and unless the roof is totaled it can be hammered out.  Look in www.eastwood.com there are even shrink hammers available.   And yes, you will need to remove your head liner.  Here again, a simple task.  Take time and have fun, open the doors and remove the side windows to give you all the room you will need.

That is what I was going to recommend, an industrial strength heat gun with ice wrapped up in shop rag. Heat dent from middle out (in circle) and quickly apply ice to middle of dent. Depending on metal normally only requires one try. Harry On 18.03.2009, at 02:45, mckinney@...

Wow-thank you all for the responses!
I have never tried shrinking metal but I'm gonna try it. So I should pound out the dent first before the heat then ice - correct? It seems like a dumb question but I just want to be sure that I do it right

Frank I push out the metal first, normally you can get the dent to come out by pushing - mark the middle of the dent with chalk - the purpose of shrinking us to reduce the stretched metal back to near its original shape. If you do not have experience with a body or shrinking hammer you may cause more damage. Just do everything one step at a time and slowly. Harry On 18.03.2009, at 21:11, franknfike@...
