Junk in fuel,, car acting strange?? any help

Post by lt1ski »

So Im having starting problems with my 72 sedan, it turns over with no fire like every other time on the times it does fire up it runs good then slowly looses power and dies and wont restart for a few more cranks, My fuel pump is workinf fine at about 6lbs I pulled my line at the carb and cranked fuel is moving BUT when I did this I got some copper colored dust and particles, so im thinking its gunked up the carb explaining the random start no start thing , any opinions ?? thanks again dean

The same thing happen to mine when I bought it..  Rusted gas tank and dirty lines.  cleaned them all out and still happened , then I found out there is a screen inside the carb that most likely wont let the gas through fast enough.  That to needs to be cleaned.  I suppose it could be something else so some one may have another answer
Good luck

To all Honda 600 owners.
        I have a list and it is available, but because some of these items are purchased one at a time the cost is like an elevator, and it never goes to the lower floors.   So giving a list with prices leads to confusion and lost trust in the product and availability.  I have been working with a shop to make some lenses, 15 months and no lens yet, but the price is good.  I make several rubber items and often tell Honda owners where to purchase them.
        So, e-mail me off line and I will respond.

It1ski;
    You have a common problem known as "Dust Rust" in your fuel tank.  Small pockets of rust are building in your fuel tank and when the pop, dust like particles of rust are released into the fuel tank, passing through the fuel pump, clogging the fuel filter and the needle valve screen in the carb.
    There is a cure, it is called sealing your tank.  Directions are located in the Hirsch Automotive site www.hirschauto.com .   I have used this product on lots of cars and it works great.  So, change your filter clean the lines and carb, seal the tank and go back to driving your Honda.

Been there, done that...... and NEVER had too again!
I spliced in a clear fuel filter between the tank and hardline, and another inline filter just below the carb - on the firewall.
The clear filter allows for a quick assessment of what would be sitting in the stock filter and is easily replaced when needed. The inline is just an added insurance policy for your carb.
It's been 10 years (knock wood) and I've never had a fuel system problem!

Dean, you forgot to mention your electronic ignition in your post. It could be that. Change your fuel filter right away, it's located nearto your left headlight down below the heater blower if you still have one. Jack up the front of the car so the fuel doesn't run out while you change it. When you have the old filter out - hacksaw the old one in half so you can see what's in it.
You'll have to remove the carb float bowl and clean the carb stuff.

hi just a note make sure that the fuel filter is flowing the right way also. i found a aftermarket filter in my car and it looked fine but then i noticed that the flow was reversed and the filter was cloged but on the inside not the ouside where you can see it. my tank had been sealed but because the filter "looked good" the previous owner didn't replace it and then wondered why car wouldnt run without stalling. car runs much better. thanks dean

In my case, I act strange, and the car is fine !!!! I put a magnet on the bottom of my fuel tank and voila ! No more rust clogging my filter. Every once in awhile I drain and flush the rust out by removing the magnet !!!! Still have a a 58K daily driver for sale..... A lot of the hard work already done. Selling because I bought BETTER car.

Steve;
    The Magnet is a great trouble shooting tool.  But, not a resolution to the problem.  Using a tank sealer is a better step but without following all the steps even that can have added problems.   A couple of things that should be looked at when purchasing a tank sealer, how long it will last and is it good with the new fuels on the market today.  Even octane boost can cause problems.  The sealer should last 10 years and should resist alcohol based fuel, Lacquer, hydrocarbons and keytones are a few.
