Help: Rear Brake Stuck
71 N600 rear drum is stuck, will not turn. It seems like its the emergency brake that is stuck on. The cable is free and has slack. The drum will not move? Any advice would be great. Thanks, John

Re: Help: Rear Brake Stuck
Tap it with a rubber mallet or gently tap it with a brass hammer.

Re: Help: Rear Brake Stuck
When I have seen this problem it has been because the drum has a rust formation which is bonding the brake shoe to the drum. I hook the wheel and tire back up and try to turn it or move the car along the pavement and see if I can break it free. If that doesn't work, I remove the plug in the brake drum which is normally used to adjust the brake spacing and then squirt penetrating oil on the left and right sides of the drum. I let it sit for several days and then it can usually be freed with some effort.
The brake shoe will be wasted because it will be saturated with fluid .... but it wasn't good anyway because it was covered in rust.
The tapping with the mallet works, too. If you end up spraying oil into it, tapping helps set up vibrations which helps the oil penetrate better. Patience will be the key. If you don't have patience, you can use the Midas Muffler approach and heat the drum with a torch until it is red. The drum will come off but it ruins all the rubber parts, may warp some of the parts, may ruin the bearings, and may start a fire.
good luck,
Dale

Hi,
I'm jumping into this late. Are you rebuilding old shocks or modifying new ones to fit the Honda 600?

Why don't you post a photo in the Albums section and place the direct link to the picture?
