Available pistons for the N600
Available pistons for the N600
Honda EC,ED1,ED2,EF1 & EM1 engines all had bores of 74mm & piston pins of 17mm.
I know that in itself doesn't mean much. Pin offset & piston face to pin
measurement would be interesting............ I am going to find out !

seems to me that some one has check on that and there was something about the top of the piston (not as much compression I think) but I may be wrong so it is worth checking out.
it would be great if they worked out for us.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
You are correct Tom ! Seem's as though they are not domed & height of piston face is less, bringing about lower compression. I am going to get hold of one & make a direct comparison.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
It has been mentioned in the past on this group that Hastings sells pistons for the Honda 600. I tried to look it up at www.hastingsmfg.com but the site was not available tonight.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
Hastings sell piston rings but not all sizes. The part number is 2C9500 for the standard size, then it is 2C9500 +.010 for the .25mm oversize and .020 for the .50mm etc, but I am pretty sure they don't have any 40's
You can get the 74mm civic piston rings in all sizes and have the oil ring groove widened on the piston to 3mm, I have had it done a couple times. A machine shop can do this. The problem with the Hastings rings is they don't come fitted, you actually have to grind the ends to achieve .008" to .015" clearance or your engine will seize if they are too tight.
My 1993 Geo Metro 3 cylinder had the exact spec pistons - 74mm x 17mm pin exact location of pin in piston but the tops were dished instead of domed.
In all the years of my searching, I have never found a good match, you can have them made but price is high.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
Miles, if NOS Honda pistons are all gone and nothing else is a simple bolt in replacement, then Mike O'Connor is the only source.
$300 is a lot of money for 2 pistons assemblies.
But, if they are a custom manufactured, quality forged, with slightly higher compression, I want a set.
Hey, maybe Tim Mings has a bunch of pistons laying around!

Re: Available pistons for the N600
I have just a single pair of original oversized N600 pistons with rings in my stock of bits.
Lack of pistons is stopping me from completing three further engines.
Miles mentioning the fact that he himself has yet to find an alternative piston makes me feel it is worth concentrating on finding a way of making use of ED1 pistons. Nothing to lose. Marshall.

Pistons for the N600
Marshall, 3 engines, you have got some good backup if you need it. That is going to be the problem future owners will face.
No parts!
The ED1 pistons could be a good alternative, if we can get a high compression version.
You Honda owners know we will run out of parts soon, luckily there are such a limited number of cars left, it won't matter to most of us.
Usually it takes 20 years for after market part companies to start up once the factory support has stopped. With these cars it's been 40 years already and nothing has happened!
We will be in trouble real soon.
Hey, for J. Leno rare is good for an investment, but for an average guy, it sucks.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
I have been selling oversize piston kits for many years, these are custom made and come in two sizes, .50 and 1.00. The price is cheap compared to buying all four pieces from Honda that you can not do and have not been able to do for many years. Kit includes pistons, rings, pins and clips. And a head gasket also if you pay extra, currently I have two sets of 1.00 kits in stock, I sold three kits this week and over the last five years I have sold over 100 kits with not a single problem, so there is no need to worry about pistons for many years to come, our focus as a group should be on crankshafts but you think piston kits are high @ $300.00 then u better not think about rebuilding a crankshaft.

Re: Available pistons for the N600
Miles is right;
I purchased some a few years back. They don't always have them on the shelf. Like anything else, I had to wait for several weeks to get them in. I ordered through a machine shop where they had the cylinders bored 1.5 thousands over piston size and matched the rings.
As Miles said, the rings always come in a bit larger than spec. In fact the rings I ordered for my 67 Datsun pickup, had the next size up oil rings. If you are still in the "do it yourself" mode. Eastwood sells a ring grinding tool, works great.
