It could have happened, but unlikely. There isn't any easy swap for a larger engine. Unless you have expert fabrication skills and a bit of spare change, it will be difficult.
Now, I have seen a 4 cylinder Datsun (RWD), as well as a V-8 shoehorned in a Sedan. If you make a swap, please post some pix of the build.
