cutting out

Hi guys,
Adjusted valves twice, adjusted timing three times,
bottle of heet in gas tank. Same problem. Points were
about a month old when engine was taken apart. Carb
has not been touched since it was rebuilt, before
engine disassembled. New plugs and plug wires, 5
gallon of fresh gas. Engine ran good before overhaul.
I get about 13 MPH in first then engine cuts out and
car bucks. I can't get it up to proper shift points
before this starts.

top,or the early style with a rubber diaphram ? The reason I ask
is,if the diaphram has a vacuum leak,(tear) this can happen. Will it
run better or worse if you pull the choke out a little? Check your
fuel flow ,by disconecting hose at carb,and turning key on,the pump
should be clicking,and fuel should be pumping out,not dribbling out!
It's v.hard to diagnose this way,but it can be solved! Do you have
an extra carb you can try? On cars this old,the tanks rust, and the
filter needs changed accordingly!

Pull one of your plugs and put your engine at top dead center and check with
a scribe or other long thin object to see if your pistons are all the way
up. You may have your timing mark 180 out. If it is ok, then do a
compression test. But it sure sounds like out of time, or one hell of a
vacuum leak.

Choke in or out no diff. old style carb, was running
good before, hasn't been touched since.

Well, riceburner is correct. the old style carb has a flaw, the diaphragm
goes and the car goes slow. Do you have one of the later carbs? if not, I
may be able to pick up a diaphragm

Bill,
I have old style carb. Diaphram was bad, I installed one out of my spare carb, it looked decent. I raised float level to get more fuel. Plug wires had kind of come loose from coil, so I reglued them. Runs better, but still have trouble bringing up RPM's, mainly in second gear. Valve timing is correct, adjusted electrical timing back and forth (runs best all the way forward), points look ok, condensor is not shorted. Have some carbon on plugs. Any other ideas.

Greg;
Your engine is separate from the transmission, If it revs all the way, it revs all the way. It makes no difference which gear your in. Put your hand under your carb by the accelerator pump and see if it is leaking. If not, then pull the points breaker plate and see if it is moving side to side instead of only twisting back and forth. You may not be holding your points in position.
