Hi Colin;
Rice burner is correct in that your cam chain should not be loose. If
the chain is as loose as you say then it is already stretched and should be
replaced. Take a flash light and look down into the middle of the engine.
The center roller should look smooth on the top sides with a rise in the
middle. If you look into the back side you should be able to see further
into the engine and may see the lower tensioner wheel riceburner spoke of
and tell if it is riding no t he plunger at the back side of the metal
holder for the wheel. I am including a picture of where these items are.
