When you visit a Web site using CompuServe
(and its cousin American Online), images on the
page are compessed into a proprietary format called
ART. The online services do this to save space on their
servers and to speed up loading times, but there are some
drawbacks. The compressed images don't look nearly as good
as the originals. When you save these images from AOL or
CompuServe, they're saved in ART format (even though the
file extension reads GIF or JPEG on the Mac). Windows users
can view and convert ART files using Internet Explorer 4.0
or later. To convert, open the ART file in IE, right-click
on it, select "Save Picture As" and choose BMP in the "Save
as type" box. Then save the file. The resulting BMP file can
be converted to JPEG using the Paint program (under Accessories
on the Program menu). According to AOL, there are no Macintosh
programs that can convert the ART format into a more common
form.
This seems like alot of bother for non-AOL users.
I was using someone else's AOL connection once and opened the same web page in both AOL and in Explorer, switched back and forth between them and was astounded at the difference! Those of you using AOL to view web pages and photos are only seeing 216 colors! That's it!
My laptop displays MILLIONS of colors and photos look great. But when viewed through AOL's blinders they look like they've been left out in the rain. Seriously.
If you are using AOL, try opening Internet Explorer and using THAT to browse the web instead of AOL's toolbar. You will be amazed at the difference.
