I apparently miscounted the teeth on the gear yesterday...15 teeth
tells me this is for the constant mesh trans, where the full synchro
trans has a speedometer gear with 14 teeth...if you put the early gear
in the late trans, it will only work a short while before it has a
nasty loss of teeth due to insufficient clearance!!

Evidently some one does not have both sets of speedometer gears in front of
them. So lets see if there are any other answers coming in.
