I looked at a 72 600 coupe today and it appeared to be in pretty good
shape. The only thing that I am worried about is the amount of rust
that it has. Mostly on the rear quarters in the wheel well and a
little bit under the door on the sills. The right rear corner is
missing a considerable chunk probably about the size of a soft ball.
The car reads 58k miles and is all original and is pretty much
complete. But I can't really do body work and it isn't like you can
find replacement panels so I am torn on what I should do. I know that
we are talking about a 34 year old car and maybe I am expecting too
much? Any thoughts are appreciated. If anyone is going to ask if I
looked at the floorboards or underneath the car I didn't. I just
wanted to get an overall sense of the car today and I will go back
this weekend if I want to seriously look it over closely.

You might be able to find a clean shell somewhere else and have a body shop swap the parts that work.
Then again, that's a lot of money.

Re: HOW MUCH RUST IS TOO MUCH?
Finding another would still be more cost efficient than panel replacement by a body shop.

So should I keep looking for one with a cleaner body, or get this one
and look for a swap later?
and look for a swap later?
Re: HOW MUCH RUST IS TOO MUCH?
Sean,
I am just staring my N600 restoration, and I just bought three cars.
One has a great body (virtually no thru-rust) but a bad head on the
engine. One has hideously rusted quarter panels, nearly no glass, a
nearly completely disassembled engine, but great bumpers and all the
parts are there. The third car has all the glass, a somewhat banged
up body, great engine, but lots of floorboard, trunk, and engine bay
rust.
My point is, if you see that the coupe in question has other good
parts on it besides the body, get it for those parts. Then you can
keep your eye out for a good body to put all the good parts on.
