z600 starter

Hi, I have a 1972 honda z600. I have a question my car runs fine, it
starts up fine. but for some reason out of no where I tried to start
it the other day, the starter woundnt crank. the starter gear seems
to get stuck in the
tranny. I took out the starter to give it a test, it spins fine and
the gears moves up and down, but when I put it back in it will get
stuck.. so i went and have the starter rebuild for $90
and its still the same problem.
could it be the transmission? all the gears on the transmission are
fine,its weird when i put the starter back in the tranny and crank it
the starter would get stuck, jam and if i hold it for long time i
will see smoke comming from the starter. oh and i did crank the
engine with a a wrench and it spins fine and flywheel tooth are all
ther. maybe the flywheel is loose? please

also anyone here know where i could get another starter for my 72
z600?

Hitachi starter such as brushes, armature, field coil, rear cap etc, but most importantly the 2 items that don't cross are the front housing and starter drive (Bendix). Gear drive has same amount of teeth, but is 1.5mm fatter than the 16498 part causing the gears to bind.
You may have stripped teeth off your flywheel as well. Shine a flashlight into the starter hole and rotate the engine looking for broken teeth. With the starter out rotate the engine forward with a 17mm wrench. If you need a front housing, I have like 20 of them, can trade you if you like to pay shipping both ways. "
I found a starter gear (9 teeth) and it measures out to be approx. 4.5mm. So if yours measures out about 6, it would be the wrong gear. Hope this helps.

yup it was the wrong gear alright. I just picked up a used one from
Tim in azusa. im so happy i got it back running! yeah!
heres a pic of the gears, really hard to tell from pics but the wrong
gear is a little bit bigger.
