Fuel tank rust --- clean or replace?

I've had an issue with rust in my tank since I acquired the car from
someone else and have rebuilt entire top end of the engine. Didnt
think too much of it until a new filter clogged only after 120 miles
of short distance driving. Decided to pull the tank and was able to
shake and bang out multiple handfulls of dry rust. I've attempted to
restore it by blowing compressed air and using parts cleaner, but it
may need help from a radiator shop or other mechanic who has
restoration experience.
Question. Has anyone replaced their tank with a racing tank or fuel
cell that is aluminum or plastic. If so, which one or what kind and
gallon capacity can I fit in there. Measurements of the factory tank
are around 24"x15"x6.5" .
Meanwhile the tank is out and dry in my shop and I'm debating between
restoration or replacement. Any ideas, places to have it restored,
or options would be appreciated.

Hi Jeff;
I have used Hiesch automotive products for many years with no problems.  Go to www.hirschauto.com or call 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX and ask them about their gas tank prep and sealer kits for smaller tanks.  Etch is about $12.00 and the sealer about $18.00.  Really great stuff.

If it wasn't for rust......I'd have no 600 at all !!
And while I'll certainly look into Bills suggestion, I have another remedy for  those less inclined (like myself) to drop the tank.
I install a small CLEAR filter just outside the tank - this protects the less accessible stock filter and allows for a quick visual check of condition prior to a road trip.

17 yrs ago i used gravel and shaked tank by hand with sending out and a car wash i would  either i would fix it or their would be something to fix on it when i hand it over to the shop.

what i do for rusty gas tanks.
take a half and half mixture of muratic acid and swish it around for a while. this has worked more than once to a tank full of shelac (dried gas) .
try it guys...................hope this helps.
