undercoating

Post by corvallismatilda »

Does anyone know if asbestos was used in undercoating on Honda n600s?
Mine was made in 1971, so it seems possible asbestos might have been a
component. I'm thinking about getting a piece tested to find out, but
was wondering if anyone out there had any knowledge of this.
Thanks,

GP;
Looking at the application I would doubt that it has asbestos in the formula, but it may have lead.

Hi there,
Just wanted to let everyone know I did get a small piece of the
undercoating tested, and it was positive for asbestos (about 5%
chrysotile content). So, as a warning to others, you may want to avoid
grinding off the undercoating as it has the potential to release
asbestos into the air. I am still waiting to hear if it also contains
lead; should know in the next day or two.

GP;
So what your saying is that if you start grinding on the rough areas under the wheel wells and body there is a possibility of asbestos being broken down to a fiber particle small enough to be ingested.  So the caution here is to scrape the material off the body after applying paint stripper.  Because asbestos encapsulated in paint is not harmful.  Unless your chewing on it.
GP, is this what your saying?

Hello group,
Running into a storage problem here and i may have to move my Z coupe out of my brother's garage...or sell it. Don't want to sell it cause I had it out this weekend and it ran pretty well.  Looks like it needs a carb rebuild though.  Hopefully it will fit into my father's shed.  With that said, can anyone provide for me the exact size of the z coupe ( down to the inch) from bumper to bumber along with the width. No need to factor in the side mirror.  i can remove that if it's a problem.  Hope all are making progress with your Z's as summer approaches.  thanks in advance.

This link is to the offical Honda dimensional drawings for the 600
coupe on my website. Hope this helps.

I should probably include the link - might work better....

This is the link to the Honda 600 dimensional drawings that was
promised and not included in my previous response. Sorry about that.

Hi there,
Grinding off the undercoating will pulverize it...and release asbestos
encapsulated in the paint/undercoating into the air. Although
ingesting it isn't a good idea, most fibers swallowed will most likely
pass though the digestive tract and leave the body in a few days.
Getting them on your skin isn't as big an issue either, as they can't
easily get into the body that way. The biggest concern with released
asbestos fibers is breathing it in and getting it into the lungs.
Wearing a hepa mask/respirator will certainly help reduce one's
exposure to it via inhalation, but then there is the problem of the
dust that is kicked up into the air and then settles in the
surrounding area (such as inside one's garage). Disturbing the dust
can cause the asbestos fibers to then again be suspended into the air
where they can then be inhaled (if the person disturbing them isn't
wearing a mask). Since asbestos is a known human carcinogen, there is
no "safe" level of asbestos exposure. Agencies such as EPA strongly
encouraged that any exposure be avoided or reduced to help minimize
one's risk of lung cancer/mesolthelioma/etc. down the line (which
often doesn't show up for 10-30 years after exposure). Data indicates
those with health problems resulting from asbestos usually worked in
an environment where they were exposed to asbestos day in and day out
over long periods of time (e.g. asbestos miners/factory workers), so
those of us coming into contact for brief periods at home probably
won't see as much of an increased risk. It's still something to
consider though when deciding whether or not to grind the undercoating
off...from my perspective, at least being aware there is a risk and
then deciding whether or not to do it is better than not knowing at all.
If anyone would like more information on asbestos, visit
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts61.html for a good fact sheet. The EPA
also has a good information sheet on preventing asbestos exposure
among brake/clutch repair workers (with some tips for home mechanics).

Oops. Left off the EPA link to the "Current Best Practices for
