Z600, I've been thinking about doing this on one of the parts cars I
have (with a blown motor). Now I've pretty much decided I want to do it.
I was thinking of using a CBR600 motor (keep it 600cc). I looked at
some ATVs with independent rear suspension for a possible chain-driven
differential. Problem is that they all seem to have an integral,
single rear disk--which means that it isn't really a differential at
all, just a spool / solid rear end. Would be fine for a rear wheel
drive car, but no fun on a front-driver.
QUaife sells sealed chain differentials, which are used in
Bike-Engined minis, but really are designed for C-Sports Racers,
D-Sports racers--rear engined, rear drive race cars. I believe they
are essentially a sealed B-series or D-series Honda unit. Costs about
$1000. They have reversing differentials for about $2000.
Pretty reasonable prices for a nearly bespoke differential, but too
much for me on this project.
I was going to build a sealed housing for an open or gear-type diff
from a Honda Civic/Integra.
Was going to mount a cog for a reverse gear--using a starter motor.
I'll be posting project details on the team blog.
